95% of toenail infections are caused by Dermatophytes.

Dermatophytes are a fungus. The one most responsible for the infections we see in Podiatrists offices in Cranberry Twp Pa, are Trichophyton rubrum ( T. Rubrum) and Trichophyton mentagrophytes ( T. Mentagrophytes).

Toenails are not the only area of the body that fungus grows. You may recognize these common names associated with their infected area of the body:

  • Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis)
  • Crotch itch (tinea cruris)
  • Ringworm (tinea corporis)
  • Toenail fungal (tinea unguium, onychomycosis)

How can I maintain foot health if I have toenail fungus while traveling in the summer?

Maintaining foot health while traveling in the summer when you have toenail fungus involves taking several precautions to prevent the condition from worsening and to avoid spreading the infection. Here are some tips to help you:

  1. Keep Feet Clean and Dry:

   – Wash your feet daily with soap and water.

   – Dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent moisture buildup.

  1. Wear Breathable Footwear:

   – Choose shoes made from breathable materials like mesh or leather to allow air circulation.

   – Avoid wearing the same shoes every day; allow them to air out and dry completely between uses.

  1. Use Antifungal Powder or Spray:

   – Apply antifungal powder or spray to your feet and inside your shoes to help control moisture and prevent fungal growth.

  1. Avoid Walking Barefoot:

   – Wear flip-flops or sandals in communal areas such as hotel showers, pool areas, and locker rooms to reduce the risk of spreading the fungus.

Walking barefoot on beaches can expose your feet to fungi and bacteria, increasing the risk of toenail fungus. Here are some steps to protect your feet:

  1. Wear Beach Shoes or Sandals:

   – Use water shoes or flip-flops to minimize direct contact with potentially contaminated sand and surfaces.

  1. Clean Feet Regularly:

   – Rinse your feet with clean water after leaving the beach to remove any sand, salt, or microorganisms.

  1. Dry Feet Thoroughly:

   – Dry your feet completely, especially between the toes, to prevent a moist environment where fungi can thrive.

  1. Apply Antifungal Powder or Spray:

   – Use antifungal powder or spray on your feet before heading to the beach to create a protective barrier.
